Dreams DO come true

I'm squealing with excitement this morning; I can hardly contain myself.

I just signed a contract with a publisher to get my knitting book published. You know, all those fabulous modern style'd dishcloths I design? Yep, that's what it will be.

A dream come true. I've been an avid knitter for many years now after leaving a stressful hospice nursing job. Taking it upon myself to learn this craft has been a journey...and a fun journey at that. This excitement for the craft led me into designing. I live for modern designs (though, if you look at my house, it's nothing like modern). I love the clean lines, cool cables, and twists and turns you can only find in a modern design. I also use fun colors to enhance the modern flare.

But, the best part of all was having my major support system in place; my wonderful husband. Without his constant "push", I would have given up on this dream.

I will keep you all in the loop as this project moves forward.

You, my readers, are the next major support system I couldn't do without...(humbly saying) thanks!

...glad you asked! Is there such a thing as having too many projects on individual needles? Whew...I'm glad, because I currently have 6 different projects going. There's always another project I'm SUPER anxious to start.


Hexipuffs for Beekeeper's Quilt

With that said, the most fun project I've recently encountered is the "BeeKeeper's Quilt". No, it's not made with fabric, its made with tiny hexagon shaped knitted puffs that are sewn together to form a "quilt." Quite addicting. The challenge was casting on with 2 needles then working in the round with those same 2 needles. I know, blah...blah...blah...if you're not a knitter, but if you are, well, I'd definitely check it out.

Soft as a Cloud (in baby blue color)

My ex-son-in-law has asked me to make him a ski hat...of course, I never turn down an opportunity to make a ski hat. And my granddaughter and her friend need big sister hats (the Harriet Hat) as they will be expecting their new baby brother soon (did I forget to mention, baby got a new hat too?) Soft as a Cloud hat in baby blue. Oh, and an Etsy order arrived needing my attention; a set of dishcloths.

Crafts are like...

You know, life is a funny thing sometimes, it brings us down when we least expect it, and it picks us up at just the right time...

In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on. ~Robert Frost

Don't you feel that way about your craft? It's a form of relaxation - that when you're feeling stressed, it's a great go-to. If it has stressed you out, it's something we can set down and walk away from.

That's what makes crafting such a fun thing. I also feel the same way about my writing. That's another form of craft that has to be created, right? I have such a great time getting into the heads of my characters, then all of a sudden I'm stuck. I mean really stuck. Like how will the story progress? What is my character thinking? Where are they heading?

Without our craft (and I feel bad for those that don't have one), our lives would be boring. There wouldn't be anything to go-to.

I say, if you're reading this and don't have a craft, find one! It will be there no matter how life treats you.

Let's Create

Good Morning!

Nothing like waking up to a bit of snow on the ground, and temperatures so cold, you can see the ground glisten. I love winter, but only when viewed from the inside of my warm house. A place I nest daily to complete new projects, sew a little, read a little, and just be.

Not much on the agenda today, though a peruse through cupcake recipes to find the perfect one for my granddaughter's 5th birthday party. Gosh, creating yet again...how much fun is this?

As far as creating a new project...yes, I have a lace scarf in the "to design" pile. Knit Picks, yet again, will (hopefully) love this new design. Lace is something that make me happy to knit; it's fun, different, yet a challenge.

Ripples and Lace-My design (not newest though)

Wikipedia says:

"Lace is an openwork fabric, patterned with open holes in the work, made by machine or by hand. The holes can be formed via removal of threads or cloth from a previously woven fabric, but more often open spaces are created as part of the lace fabric. Lace-making is an ancient craft. True lace was not made until the late 15th and early 16th centuries. A true lace is created when a thread is looped, twisted or braided to other threads independently from a backing fabric."

Have you done lace? It can be as simple as using a worsted weight yarn or you can find the lace weight yarn, which is so very fine to work with, but so very elegant when it's complete.

So, what will you create today? Cupcakes? Knitted project? Maybe you crochet?

Day 4—Knit-a-long

Okay, Let’ move on. Full Steam ahead, as I say.

Today, and for the next few days, I’m going to ask that you complete those 8 rounds 5 more times, for a total of 6. THEN complete rows 1-3 ONE more time.

Are you using a checking off system?

*numbering a piece of paper 1-8 and putting a mark by the row complete

*using your row counter, then keeping track of how many rounds you do

Whichever way works best, is the method for you. Or maybe you’ve created your own.

Day 3—Knit-a-long

Yay! We're on our way...

So, let's recap…we’ve learned to cast on and knit our first stitches, right?

Now, it's time to purl and create a sequence of knits and purls! You had a video on Day 2 on How to Purl. If you need to refer back, please do.

You should have your first 3 rows knitted, easy huh?

The next 8 rows will provide you with the foundation to creating this fabulous modern dishcloth…here we go!

The music is a bit corny, but the technique is spot on! K2, P2.

1^st row– K3, *K2, P2* repeat to last 3 sts, K3

You will knit the first 3 sts, then K2 sts, the purl 2 sts. The asterisk means you will repeat ONLY those sts until you reach the last 3 sts. THEN knit the last 3 sts.

2^nd row – K3, *K2, P2* repeat to last 3 sts, K3

Exactly the same as the 1st row.

3^rd row—Knit all sts

Knit all sts. Keep in mind, your K3 border sts are embedded in this row.

4^th row—K3, P32, K3

You will knit the first 3 sts, then purl the next 32, then knit the last 3

5^th row—K3, *K2, P2* repeat to last 3 sts, K3

Exactly the same as the 1st and 2^nd row.

6^th row—K3, *K2, P2* repeat to last 3 sts, K3

Exactly the same as the 1st, 2nd, and 5th row.

7^throw—K3, P32, K3

Exactly the same as the 4^th row.

8^throw—Knit all sts

If you’re new to knitting, please relax and enjoy yourself. This isn’t hard. By the end of the knit-a-long, not only will you have more confidence (my hope anyway), but you will have a completed dishcloth that you can put to use right away…don’t forget Christmas presents. Everyone loves a knitted dishcloth.

Abbreviations for terms used: whether capitalized or not, means the same thing.

CO—cast on

K—knit

P—purl

BO—bind off

Sts—stitches

Pm—place marker

K2—knit 2

P2—purl 2

*(sts)—repeat between the asterisk

The Artful Yarn Knit-A-Long

Welcome to Day 1 of our knit-a-long.

Today is gathering supplies for our project. Tomorrow we get to knit. Yay! These posts will remain on my blog so there is no pressure to finish "on time". You can jump in whenever it’s convenient for you.

I will post each day for a total of 5 days (this being day 1), until the dishcloth is complete. You are free to leave comments on the post, but most will take place here on our Flickr page. This is a great place for discussion. I’ll post threads that everyone can comment to, as well as you all are free to post threads as well, and I hope you do. Each evening (and probably more often), I will check in to answer questions and check out all your cool pictures. I hope you’ll upload pics of your (w)ork (i)n (p)progress—WIP. It’ll be a ton of fun to see how everyone’s coming along.

I encourage you to go at your own pace, or follow right along with me. We will have all levels involved in this knit-a-long. Doesn’t matter which one you are; I’m just excited to teach you this dishcloth pattern, at whatever level you’re at.

Supply List:

1 skein cotton worsted weight—sugar and cream is a great inexpensive yarn to use for these dishcloths, and can be found at Michaels/Hobby Lobby/Joann fabrics. I recommend a lighter color to make it easier to see your stitches. Knits and purls can be kinda tricky on dark yarn.

Size 7 knitting straight needle—bamboo, acrylic, aluminum…all are great choices. My favorite? Bamboo. It’s sturdy and allows the yarn to “slip” just enough without falling off your needle. But, whatever one you prefer, is the one for you.

Scissors—for snipping ends

Tapestry Needle—to weave in ends

Stitch Markers—if you prefer to mark your border stitches

Stitch Counter—for counting your rows if necessary

This dishcloth will end up about 8 x 8. The pattern calls for a size 6 needle, but thought for those of you just beginning, and others who prefer a slightly larger dishcloth, this was the right choice. Depending on how tight/loose you knit, will depend on if your dishcloth ends up to be bigger/smaller. Either way, I don’t believe it’s necessary to worry about gauge in a project like this. We’ll do that with future projects.

i'm so excited to introduce my very first knit-a-long. most knitters know it as KAL. but for those new to the craft (and, i'm ecstatic to be the one to teach this), we'll refer to it as a knit-a-long.

i'll post details starting on tuesday, october 11th, then daily after that, taking the weekend to finish up your dishcloth, with the final posting on that following monday. you can go at your own pace or keep right along with me, your choice.

having the time and ability to create in a given day, is what makes me feel so blessed.

i have new ideas developing (almost) hourly...kind scary, huh? they range from a new dishcloth design because of a textured "something" i saw, or a hat worn by one of my favorite designers on tv.

ideas of creating a knit-a-long came to fruition when my husband and i were talking about "what's next for your business" conversation...

yes, a knit-along will be right here next month. one way to learn to knit if you've had the desire. i'll help you through the entire process beginning with your shopping list. the best part is, it will include a FREE pattern of mine that you can download from ravelry.

tuesday therapy

not in the therapy sense, in the girls-who-knit-and-need-to-talk kind of therapy.

one friend starts talking and doesn't quit. that's ok, we tell her, as we continue to knit our chosen projects. another talks of the cheese block, once known as the big yellow school bus. laughter filled the air as she explained a first day of school scenario. one talked of her new job as a mentor for troubled teens, and one talked of her chosen style of knitting while we all continued to knit.

i love these girls. they make my week. the fact that i can't seem to kick start the engine in the mornings to be there by 10 (most time arriving about 1/2 hour late), i'm always glad i did.

i brought along a cup cozy to knit, and yes...finished it.

i'll have to have them smile for the camera one day, if we can stop long enough to take the picture.

do you have a knitting group you love to go to? if not, i'd suggest searching for one. you'll be so glad you did.

just another day...

what a long day, and it's not even dinner time yet.

picking up boxes, going to department of revenue to file for a sales tax license (only to find mr. tax man wasn't in today), a must-stop at a yarn shop that is going out of business to pick up some (yes), much needed yarn, a quick stop through starbucks to re-energize, and a car fill-up to replenish the gas...

are you staying with me?

a quick stop to pick up (yet) more boxes. did i mention my daughter's moving? no? she is.

so, tonight more packing after we enjoy our delicious crockpot chicken/rice dinner.

can't wait to drop into my favorite chair later this evening and finish a much neglected eyeglass sock.

gettin' ready for a craft show...

...and am so excited! this is my first ever, or maybe i'll call it, first annual, craft show.

the show is held in castle rock, co. so, for those of you in the area (denver, colorado springs, and surrounding), please stop by.

Creative Energy Bust

the days are getting hotter, the nights are staying cooler...a reason to stay in or visit my favorite coffee shop and get rid of some of my creative energy by knitting and designing new patterns.

what to do with it all, i mean the creative energy?

gosh, I find myself flitting from one project to another. with a wedding approaching, i must complete that can't-wait-to-give gift. with my followers of deb buckingham designs, i must complete (and post) another dishcloth pattern. with my etsy store "shoppers" looking for that next fabulous dishcloth set, I must create (yet) another summery set that will leave their mouth watering. and with knitpicks asking for more of my designs, i am putting the pdf's and pictures together so they can list my set on their site.

So, why on earth am I on the internet? Procrastinating, of course...

How about you? what creative energy do you have and how do you use it?

does it feel like a monday to you too?

*sigh* "the weather outside is cloudy with a chance of meatballs?" the man at the coffee shop tells me? now, what in the world does that mean?

days like this are meant for staying inside and doing the things you love (if you're fortunate like me and have a job where you work when you want), like knitting. you all know, knitting is my passion. it's a craft i don't take lightly, and one that occupies my mind.

i posted to my writing blog (debs writing muse) about not being able to locate my muse. i find myself writing here because i can always find my...well, what would be the equivalent word for muse when it comes to creating new products?

ideas? thoughts?

Oodles and Oodles of Sock Yarn

i have been a knitting fool making eyeglass socks...a cozy for your readers/sunglasses/eyeglasses. or perhaps you have another use for them. your imagination is the only thing stopping you from coming up with your own uses.

i'm in love with these. the fact that their made of sock yarn, makes them soft and less bulky. they fit inside your tote bag (i'm sure you have one), your purse, or even left in your car for your sunglasses.

i have oodles and oodles of sock yarn, so they will just keep on comin'...

Addictions Gone Crazy

i have been crazy busy designing a new line of dishcloths. i'm addicted!

i don't know if you've ever experienced (i'm sure you have) a huge addiction. kinda like coffee where you try to switch to green tea, but you find yourself in line at the nearest starbucks getting your fix. I get that! Or you tell yourself (if you're a fiber-a-holic), that you won't spend any money on yarn this week, but when you drive by (you know you can't help yourself) your favorite yarn shop, your car just knows the way in, and you walk out with a bag full of yarn you have no idea what you'll use it for.

life is full of addictions...chocolate and coffee are pretty predictable. how about the good addictions: spending time your your favorite man, eating up all the necessary time with your grandkids, carving time out of your kids schedule to get a quick lunch in because you haven't seen him/her in weeks, reading on your new nook, playing with the new skein of yarn that you had to have, buying more yarn online just because.

yes, these are some of my addictions.

Bitten by the Bug

The minute someone makes me laugh, I snort and go into a coughing coma. Oh geez...I know. This flu turned Pneumonia, is well...not fun.

Though, with that said, I've managed to complete my wip's and get some much needed rest. Because as NP Bev says, "you need to rest". Okay. Fine. I sit with my feet propped, laptop in my lap or sticks and yarn in my hands, and get stuff done.

A taste of Smores in your kitchen

This being the newest "kid" on the block in my Etsy shop. Well, they went right back out the door less than an hour of displaying them.

Smores? We all know what colors are in our most favorite treat.

So, be watching for the next fun set. Because, I know as well as anyone, that in order to get well, we need to allow our body time to rest; giving me (yet) another excuse to create.

Stay well, my friends, don't let this bug bite...it bites hard and doesn't let go (anytime soon).

I've been busy creating fun and useful things... baby hats...headbands with crochet'd flowers on them...I'm out of control. Will be posting these fun items soon.

What kind of things do you create? What is your favorite pastime/craft?

The sky is sunny today, but the temperatures are cold, this keeps me from going anywhere anytime soon--I sit and ponder life. I love to hang out in my favorite chair and think about what my next project will be, what life has in store for me as far as my Etsy shop is concerned, and how I can become more of what God wants me to be.

I know right? How absolutely adorable. The soft "sock" yarn was perfect for this Eyeglass Sock. It's frilly ruffle at the top adds just enough fun, but very practical.

Keeping it all Together

So, I wonder, how do you keep it all together during the holidays? Loaded question, huh?

I usually create a list of shopping items, that way I can make sure all my family and relatives are taken care of before the big shopping days. I'm a list maker, so I've created a list of 8 things I feel are important during this time of year...

(8) Learn to say No - if you can learn that word, you'll feel less overwhelmed with the holidays

(7) Plan ahead - like I did above with the list making. Makes your life easier when you have a plan of action

(6) Be Realistic - traditions can change, plans can change. If it doesn't work this year, don't force it.

(5) Remember the less fortunate - or better yet, those that are unemployed this holiday season

(4) Set aside Differences - try to accept others just the way they are. Sometimes there's nothing we can do about a situation, so why bother stressing over it.

(3) "Me" time - a pedicure, a massage, a bubble bath with a glass of wine and a good book. De-stresses the body.

(2) Stick to a Budget - nothing can be more stressful than trying to stretch a dollar that no longer stretches. Be reasonable. People understand. (or they should anyway)

(1) Reach Out - this could mean to others less fortunate than you, or perhaps "paying forward" - a gift to someone you don't know

Top 10 Reasons I Love to Knit

Have you ever sat and tried to figure out why you enjoy doing something? I do it all the time. It's the analytical part of my brain that allows this to happen. So here goes...

The Top 10 reasons i love to knit:

10) Able to knit a gift nobody wants

9) Gives me the the "no budget required" license to buy

8) Allows me to bow out of engagements I really don't want to go to when I'm on a deadline for my Etsy Shop

7) Gives me a reason to go to my LYS (local yarn shop) whether I need yarn or not

6) Have the opportunity to have a "girls night out" with fellow knitters

5) Be a know-it-all when your fellow knitters don't have the answers

4) Pile yarn in my bins till they overflow then wait for my husband to say, "do you really need more yarn?"

3) Of course I need more yarn, I always NEED more yarn for the newest project

2) Buy sale yarn even though I really don't NEED it

1) Honestly...because it's a way for me to relax; a way for me to concentrate on nothing. Knitting has become more than a hobby for me, it's become a therapeutic attempt for my sanity.

it's definitely a monday...i drag myself from the warmth of my bed to my computer, where I attempt to place an online order at GAP. it fails. i call the number where the agent makes my attempt a positive experience. that done, i run down to the fax machine to fax my daughter's document; no problems there. the birds are taken care of, the bed made, the husband off to work...now i must begin my day.

first things first--exercise! then i must knit. orders coming in right and left. i sometimes wish there were two or three of me running around so (we) could get more done in less time. but, that's not possible.

keeping up with things is what I love about my life. it's never dull, always busy...i love to be in charge of my day whether it's harried or slow-moving. my knitting keeps me stress-free, if there is such a thing. knitting is the avenue to getting what I want out of my online store. my store is growing and becoming popular amongst my customers. i've shipped as far as Norway and as close as my own home town.

so, put your dancin' shoes on and make the most of your harried day or better yet, dance like nobody is watching.

finding hidden treasures in the town you visit

this about sums it up, doesn't it? i mean, when one travels, and one has a hot button for finding crafting supplies, yarn in my case, one goes on the hunt for the nearest store, right?

well, i found a michaels in the large town of orlando, fl; there is absolutely no yarn shops in the general area. i'm thinking because it's so hot these people have taken to other forms of entertainment; pools, disney, malls, and grocery stores.

i believe the people that live here either have secret places they hang out at, and i have no idea how to get to, or they just plain stay inside since the temperatures (and humidity) are so high.

though, i'm not afraid to plug in a certain destination and head there. i have to say, however, that the traffic here is somewhat impossible to hang with at various times of the day--therefore, i stay inside, or around the nearest pool.

crafting while away from home

i do travel. Not a lot, but i do. there isn't a time i leave my house without grabbing my knitting bag and a recent project. i stuff it all in my favorite tote and go.

this trip to Orlando? i have my tote filled with a sock project, a dishcloth project, and a lace scarf project. one just never knows what project mood one will be in, right? any other time, i most generally have it sitting in the back seat of the car, just in case.

those that know me, know my life is about finding the latest and greatest knitting project. the one i left at home is my ruffly scarf. it's a bulky project so i usually don't tag that one along. the simple projects are the ones i love to take with me because they pack so nicely.

what about you? are you one to grab a project, whatever that may be, and head out the door? i'd love to know...

Crafting in your lifetime

You know my life is about knitting; knitting dishcloths, scarves for myself, friends and family, hats for my granddaughter, beanies for my husband...I love to knit!

However, I also have been itchin' to make cards again. Ever go through the cards at the store (Okay, I know you have), and notice how many now look handmade. They've included embellishments to add some bling, and they've layered the papers to make it look like you just came from your craft room.

I'm know as someone who loves to create. I have a fun new Cricut machine that has yet to be used. A die cut machine of sorts. I thought I'd give it a whirl with making embellishments for antique looking cards. What will I do with them, you ask?

Give to friends for specific occasions, stockpile them for an emergency card, or just plain collect them. You know, we all are collectors of one thing or another. My current collection resides in the yarn tubs.
Life is good. It's about creating keepsakes. So, what is your next crafting project. I'd love to hear...

Knitting, Reading, and other Random Thoughts

I did say there would be random thoughts, right?

As I was driving down the road, my husband calls. I answer the phone with, "This is Debbie's help desk, how may I assist you today." I went on to tell him of the constant phone calls asking for my help in one matter or another. I gasped while talking to him and he became silent. "A car backfired, I think I'm being shot at," I rambled. He laughed out loud and told me to slow down; not my speed mind you, my talking. He asked how many cups of coffee I drank, I proceeded to explain I had one cup but then I worked out. Maybe that was the reason for the non-stop-jabbering.

What am I currently reading? Can a girl really only have one book going at once? Hardly...
I'm reading a book everyone says I must, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." They, the Washington Post, calls it suspenseful, intelligent, and utterly engrossing. The jury's still out on this book for me. I'll up date you when it's over.
The other book is called "Hard to Handle." Picture a gorgeous man on the cover. Yes, romance. Steamy, entertaining, and full of, well...you know.So, the topic of knitting takes us to a close. I'm currently at work on baby washcloths, dishcloths, lace scarf, and PTBD (projects to be determined). As you all know I do love to knit. My mind races with everything from above while doing it.
Random thoughts, reading and knitting are three things that go on daily in my life/head. What goes on in your head/life each day? What do you ramble on about?

Not just for Kitchens anymore...

I've recently discovered that dishcloths are used for more than just kitchens...
* Wash the car - it's cotton fibers make it soft, therefore, not to scratch your finish. The customer that purchased these had every intention of using them in her kitchen, when she discovered one missing. Her boyfriend had taken one to wash his BMW and won't return it. He says it soft and perfect for his black finish.

* Shower - the "bumpies" as they are referred to are more like a scrubby - great for exfoliating. My customer says she won't use anything else.

* Face Cloth - because of the cotton, it provides a soft surface to clean the makeup off with and once again, slough off dead skin cells with the "bumpies"

* Dusting - Yes, dusting...an absorbent, but soft cloth that will not harm your surface. You then throw it in the wash and use it again.

* Gift Basket - Put into a gift basket for added flavor to your recipient. A starter to a kitchen type of theme, bathroom theme, car wash theme, spa theme...

Can you think of another use for these dishcloths? I'd love to hear it. Or perhaps your testimony...

Summertime Citrus Fun

you know, summer is about bright colors, it's about homemade lemonade, limes in your diet coke, and orange slices floating in your water.

the many flavors of summer is so inviting; you can smell, taste, feel, see, and hear them. hear them you might ask? yes. you can hear the juices spray on your cutting board, you can hear your knife cutting deep into the meat of the fruit. you can smell the scent of fresh lemons, citrus-y limes, and sweet oranges while you cut them. you can see the vibrant colors lying in your basket. as for the taste? well, i don't have to tell you, but i will...they are sweet, tart, cold, citrus-y, juicy, and the taste lingers in your mouth, making it water for more.

Fueling the Passion

got your attention? yea, well...not that, my friend. get your mind out of the gutter...it's the passion within your heart to create that one thing that so desperately needs out; the craft that drives your everyday passion.

for me? it's knitting. a craft i find useful in my everyday saneness. it fuels my creativity and allows for deeper inspiration in my craft(s). it keeps my mind wondering through the cobwebs (at time) to help fuel my creativity. it also keeps my mind wondering through the analytical part where i think i should be dusting or cleaning floors, but instead, i keep on knitting. i knit through the phone ringing--though i do break to pick it up. i knit through the text message that so desperately needs a response--though i do look to see who it is first. creativity is what i love to engage my mind with.
i create hand-knitted dishcloths, hats for all ages, and unbelievable lace scarves.

my hope is that you, my supportive customer/friend, gain knowledge from my posts as i share ideas, thoughts, and other fun stuff. of course, at any time feel free to pop over to my etsy shop and check out the latest and greatest. because, as you know, knitting is my passion, and it's fueled daily by my creativity.

My Tuesday Knitster Girls

I'm sure to the average person, the title wouldn't mean a thing, but those that are familiar with knitting, definitely get it.

Every Tuesday, same time, same place, my group of knitters get together and knit. The venue is Table Rock Llamas, a favorite place of mine to shop too. I adore the two women, Chris & Val, that run the shop; personable and friendly. They make our morning enjoyable, and even join in the conversations.The exchanging of stories fly around the large table and are different every week, in some cases, every hour. It's the one day of the week that nothing interferes with.
We all pack into the back building where the table is set for all 15 + of us...We pull up a chair, nestle in and begin knitting. If you're antsy like me, you get up often to check out the latest addition to the yarn shop. And what yarns I MUST bring home with me, for yet another project.

These girls range in age from 30's to 60's and have massive amounts of kids or maybe just one. These ladies brighten my day and have become a support group of sorts for whatever ails me.

So, next time you find yourself in your favorite LYS (local yarn shop), inquire on the activities that take place; be it a class or better yet a knitting group. You'll be so glad you did.

Design my Own

...is exactly what I'm doing today. Patterns, that is. I've been working hard at building my inventory of dish cloths for my Etsy store, that I thought it might be fun to design some of my own. I can't wait to share them with you, as you'll be able to download one for free on Ravelry, I'll keep you posted.

You know, if you're a knitter, how we become obsessed with certain things to knit, or even if you're not a knitter, you become obsessed with something, right? Then we spend all our waking moments (when not busy doing work stuff)...knitting. That's how I've been with dish cloths. They couldn't be any simpler. They are all I ever use in my kitchen anymore, unless they're dirty, then I have to reach for the "other" one.

What makes them different? Glad you asked, they're 100% cotton, sturdy, but just plain fun to use. I'd recommend one.

Perspective

I am in awe of a 3 year old who knows what she wants. I'm talking about my granddaughter, Jasmine. We went to dinner last night, her, myself and my friend, the server asked each of us what we were having tonight, and Jasmine looks up at her and says, "Umm, a hot-gog and fries." She was pointing to the picture as she so boldly stated her request. A 3 year old that orders her own...priceless.

After she devoured her hot-gog and fries, we headed over to the craft store, where she casually mentions she won't be sitting in a cart, "Grandma, I walk", she states. So off we go, side by side, pooh clutched under her tiny arm, a slight bounce to her step.

Just as we round the corner, she snatches a bag of licorice off the rack and states, "I need this, I carry it", and once again, off we go. As we make it to the yarn department, she obviously knows what this is. "Grandma, you make me a hat?" She so casually asks. I nod in response as we locate the yarn she feel is perfect, not quite right, I'm thinking to myself. Her skills in picking colors for my dishcloths, on the other hand, is right-on. "Grandma, you need this?" as she hands me the red color. "No," I reply. "Grandma, you need this one?" she smiles up at me as she hands me the natural colored one. "Yes, that's perfect," I say to her. She couldn't be more happy that she has now been a big part of the color search.

So, next time you have the opportunity to shop with a 3 year old, I'd recommend it, it gives one a whole new perspective from their world.

Dreams

Ever have a dream to do something and the minute you're excited about it, it's squashed. That's how I feel today as I ponder opening my own yarn shop. After talking, quite in depth with my husband, I realized the economy hasn't completely stabilized and my love for something may go down the drain the minute my doors open. Do you agree? You know . . . he could be wrong though.

I have a vision for my yarn shop; fully stocked walls that house multi-colored fibers, samples to show in those fibers, an array of books to choose from, gadgets, needles hanging from hooks installed in the clapboard walls, a barn-like appearance that creates warmth, a large rectangular table placed in the center of the room with faithful customers knitting away, a side room filled with hand-made items on display as crafters learn a new trick or two, a class taught by an experience knitter friend of mine, and me dancing around the store in hopes of helping my newest customer find that perfect pattern to begin such a fun craft.

So, you see, my dream of a yarn shop is vivid. I'd call it The Artful Yarn; corresponds well with my Etsy shop.

We all live in a dream world, but sometimes our dreams are put on hold. Do you have a dream? Care to share? Put it out there for everyone to read, because our dreams can become our realities, if we just believe hard enough.

Connection process

The line from the Alpaca to the knitter is so intriguing to me.

It tells me that if one individual didn't raise these beautiful creatures, there wouldn't be any fibers for us knitters to knit with. Right? How about the spinners of these luscious fibers? They too, are so important in the process, because once again, if they weren't spun, us knitters wouldn't have any fibers to knit with. And lastly, the yarn shop . . . if the yarn shops didn't sell the fibers that the spinners spun, that the Alpaca farms didn't raise, then us knitters wouldn't have the fibers to knit with.

See how this works?Knitting puts me in my happy place; a place to rekindle me, a place to relax me. How about you? Do you knit? What else do you do to relax? Do you love to find that happy place to rekindle you? I'd love to know...

What's on my needle?

The dish cloths have drawn me in. After using them now for about 2 weeks, I can't use anything else. They wash up nice, they dry nice. They are absorbent, durable and makesa statement in the kitchen due to their yummy color(s).

My current cloth is a Grape color; part of my Spring into Spring Collection. Can't wait to show you. Take a look at the Hot Waffle Trio in my online Etsy Shop, they will look just like that, only different colors.

Rockies Fan!

"Go Rockies" is what I hear on a consistent basis from my granddaughter. She's only (almost) 3, and has a love for baseball. I'll surely be putting this beanie on her head the next time she enters the Rockies stadium.
This beanie is fun, stylish and trendy. What kid wouldn't want to their head adorned with something they love; baseball.

It's 7" from top to bottom and stretches to fit any sized head up to 22" around. Just about anyone young-not-so-young can wear this.

This beanie was inspired because of Jasmine's love of the sport. But even if you don't have a love for the sport, you must love the color combination. It's made with 100% Merino wool. Oh So Warm!

I love to knit beanies of any kind. The creativity flows when my needles are flying.

The cold weather sparks an interest in these little skullcaps, as one kid called it.

Share the Love of Knitting with Others

. . . is so satisfying to me. I've recently been asked by several friends to teach them how to knit. Of course! I told them . . . I'd love to share the art of knitting.

Knitting is an art. It's said that when you knit a sweater or a scarf with your own hands, and give it to a loved one, it signifies love that you feel towards them. So, I get why others want to learn this relaxing/fun craft. The magic that is created by different yarns (fibers), stitches, textures, is an art that enthusiasts get to create and use their imagination. You can take a pattern for example, use a different stitch, add a pom-pom, embroider a snowflake on the hat, and it gives the original design a whole new look.

The needles that can be used come in bamboo, acrylic, glass, or circular. And depending on the size of the needle will depend on what type of stitch you get. A larger needle gives you a larger stitch, and a smaller needle gives you a smaller stitch . . . you get it.

Not only do the needles come in different sizes but the yarn does too. You have lace weight, light weight, DK or medium weight, bulky, or chunky. There are many varieties that run in between all these too. It's important to read the label of your yarn so that you know what needle size works best for your yarn, therefore allowing the project to come out exactly as it's supposed to.

Your pattern will give you a needle size and tell you it has to be so many stitches per inch...This is known as gauge. Compare label of yarn to your pattern, and it should work.

Example: Size 7 needle gives you 5 stitches/inch
Size 8 needle gives you 4.5 stitches/inch
Size 9 needle gives you 4 stitches/inch
Size 10 needle gives you 3.5 stitches/inch

Get it??? So my advice is to follow what your pattern is trying to tell you and check the gauge to make sure your product will turn out like you'd hoped.

So, why mention all this when this post was supposed to be about sharing the love of knitting with others... I just want to instill in every knitter, new or seasoned, that gauge plays a huge role in how your item turns out.

Sit. Relax. Knit. Dump.

It's been a while, or at least a couple weeks, that I've written anything for my fans. I've been hard at work getting my Etsy shop http://www.theartfulyarn.etsy.com/ ready for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

I'm knitting the ribbed beanies in colors that coordinate and colors that say "team spirit". They seem to be quite popular. Imagine our Rockies; black and purple, our Broncos; blue and orange. Can you think of any other teams that might be popular with our youth and teens? Let me know at the end of this post. I'd love to make them. I'm not much of a sports fan, but many are. Avalanche are my boys, though I haven't watched them since Sakic left.

Another popular hat is the simple rolled top cap with a very large pom-pom on top. I'll post more pics of them soon. Be watching!
Speaking of popular, not sure how I thought of this with that last statement, but knitting has become popular by many. The hours of relaxed time sitting with your needles and skein of yarn, can bring so much to your day. Imagine yourself tossing all the ideas around in your pretty little head, and making something of them. Imagine getting rid of unwanted thoughts by thinking through them, finishing the hat/scarf/afghan you're working on, then discarding them. A great way to empty your mind.

I have a knitting addiction. Yes! I admit it. My husband doesn't comment anymore, he knows exactly where to find me doing exactly what he thought; knitting. I can't imagine my day without a bit of relaxation with my needles and yarn.

The Neurotic Knitter

Catchy phrase, huh? Not only did I finish the socks, but I got them mailed off to my sister. WooHoo! Now, I'm knitting a pair for my husband, along with a hat.

My knitting is taken on a whole new meaning since opening my Etsy store. I now have a purpose. I've always had a purpose, I guess, but now it goes for the good of my store. I hope to add some Christmas items; things you can give as gifts or keep for yourself. Be watching for those as well.

I have a list of hats that I'm so excited to knit up for The Artful Yarn, different and playful.

So, as you see I can be a bit neurotic when it comes to knitting. I love to knit! Who would have ever known? Not even my best friend . . .

Whats' on my Needle

Thanks for asking? As you can see, I'm currently knitting socks.

Socks for me are relaxing. Socks give me instant gratification, well, in about a week anyway. This is one of two.

The perfect sock for fall like weather, even winter. They are made with washable fibers, yet keep your feet warm and cozy. Come in oodles of colors and striping. Fibers can be anything from wool to cotton.

Need a pair? Just comment and let me know. I haven't started offering them in The Artful Yarn shop on Etsy yet, but I will.

Also, leave a comment and give me your opinion. Would socks be something people would want? And again . . . how about you?

Cotton Candy

. . . is the name given to my Chunky is Better scarf. Yes, it's done. You can check it out in my Etsy on-line store. In case you forgot, the address is www.theartfulyarn.com.

I loved working with the chunky yarn. The way it created the chunky color striping was amazing. I think I'll be making this scarf in a variety of colors for a variety of sizes to include children-adults. The only difference will be the length. This one ended up to be 57 inches.

Don't you love the name, Cotton Candy. Wait till you see it, you'll know exactly where the name came from. Soft pinks and purples makes this almost edible. I said almost, so don't try this at home. I promise it won't taste like cotton candy, only look like it.

Close you eyes . . . no peeking. Now imagine sitting in the stands at your favorite baseball or hockey game, you hear the man yelling "candy, candy heerree", his voice trails up at the end. You wave your arm for him to see and he runs over with his balloon-like contraption filled with different colors of cotton candy. You choose the multi-colored one; pinks and purples.

Okay, you can open your eyes. That is exactly what this scarf looks like. Can't you just taste it?

Chunky's Better

As you know, I can't just have, well . . . just 2 projects on the needle. I had to add a third.

I'm so excited about his scarf. I can't decide whether to put it in a "Chunky" category of it's own, on my Etsy site (www.theartfulyarn.etsy.come), or create a fun and eclectic category for the "Teen Scene." I'm thinking that this scarf would be perfect around the neck of any hip teen wanting to dress-up their coat or outfit. I know I would, or will I should say, and I way beyond the teen scene. I plan on wearing this one out when it's finished.

It knits up fast due to the the "toddler size" needle #15. My husband and I laughed as I mentioned I felt like a knitter with training wheels. The original pattern called for a size 19.

19!?!? I said out loud. I don't have a 19. So as I read further into the pattern the artist said, use the largest ones you have. So, after digging through my needle stash, which there are a lot of, I found the 15.

This makes for a beautiful pattern as you can see. And the yarn is variegated, so the striping is falling nicely into place; light pink, dark pink, shades of purple, and winter white.

Hmm . . . now, what to call it. Any thoughts?

Knit faster...you won't run out of yarn

My knitting group is full of stories, so when I'm sitting there knitting, I have my listening ears on. My friend was telling this story...Oh, it's funny!

The teenager goes out one evening to hang with her friends. It's getting late and she hasn't arrived home yet. (My friend) says to her husband the he needs to go find her. Husband gets in the car and begins to drive down the road. Approaching him on the other side is a fast moving car. He swirls his head around and says, "That looks like (daughter)." He then notices a cop car chasing after this fast moving car.

Husband turns the car around and heads back in the direction of home. Just as he approaches the house, he sees that (daughter) has arrived home, but the cop was sitting behind her. Husband pulls into the driveway, looks over his shoulder, and notices the cop pull away. Odd, he thought.

After getting out of the car and approaching the (daughter's) car, he asks the (daughter) why she was driving so fast...

She replies, "Dad, (friend) told me that if you drive fast, you won't run out of gas."

Husband shook his head.

So the same theory can be applied to our knitting, girls...

If you knit fast enough, you won't run out of yarn.

What's on my Needle

Well, thanks for asking...of course, not just one thing.

(Sneak Peak) I'm furiously working on another lace scarf, knitted with a lime-green bamboo yarn. Oh how luscious it feels between your fingers; soft, cozy, but light-weight.

(Sneak Peak) My Classic Teen Beanie line will soon be launched with styles your teen will love to show off. They will feel great wearing these trendy caps. And Mom--they're washable. Makes it even easier. The colors are modern but tasteful, and just the right weight for a cool fall/winter day.

It's so funny, the minute I get up I make my coffee and then sit down to knit. Of course, updating my blog and adding new images to The Artful Yarn website is a must, but knit...knit...knit...as my dear husband says.

I'm so excited to introduce you all to my blog. This was born out of my new Etsy store. My store hasn't officially opened so I won't divulge the address yet. I'll have a grand opening special, so be sure to check back. I will be selling lace scarves made out of yummy yarns, toddler caps, infant caps, and beanies.

These fibers are what make the hats so special. Think of pumpkin spice, candy apples, Neapolitan ice cream...does that make your mouth water. That is my goal in producing these fabulous knitted items, to tempt your palette.

I will be sharing knitting stories as well as sharing what's currently on my needle.

My wish is that you'll become a follower so you can see first hand what I'm up to; because I'm always up to no good...whether I'm out shopping for the perfect yarn, writing to entertain you, or just plain knitting--I'm about being busy.
